Victorian

The houses are like old Victorian bungalows with wrought iron railings and corrugated tin roofs, the cars the same as in England but with a blend of the states thrown in, the familiar brand names in the super markets and of course the familiar language pronunciation and spelling - news agents, sweater, queue, pies and fish and chips.

But on top of that there are the things that make Australia uniquely Australia. There really is nowhere quite like it. This hunk of rock tucked away ‘down under’ far away from so many of the influences of other continents.

Walking down the street I am met by the heady scent of freshly blooming star jasmine growing next to birds of paradise, palm trees and frangipani. This is spring and I’ve never seen the frangipani trees after their winter sleep, quite bear and smooth to the touch. Paperbark and Eucalyptus trees also abound.

The songs of the thrush and the black bird are replaced by the kookaburra with its loud 'koo-koo-koo-koo-koo-kaa-kaa-kaa'. Parakeets and huge crow looking things ( <-- from the latin, biggo crowus thingus lookus ) are also in abundance.
